Imagination and Transformative Space

The Graduation Exhibition of the Laboratory of Scenography Athens is the culmination of students' dramaturgical and visual research on theatrical and literary texts, as well as the outcome of independent artistic expression.

The LSA has been operating for over two decades as a research laboratory, exploring the limits and possibilities of contemporary scenography and its dynamic interaction with visual arts. New approaches, different modes and contexts of (re)presentation are explored through artistic creation and critical reflection.

This year's exhibition showcases fourteen scenographic and costume design proposals developed by the students over the academic year, along with a video installation. These proposals demonstrate that the theatrical space is not merely the sum of its objects, but a universe of sensations that plays a vital role in shaping our understanding of space and experience. The graduates' work highlights how scenography expands the imagination, transcending fixed environments and enabling transitions between the real and the imagined space.

Through experimenting with various materials and research methods—such as drawings, collages, three-dimensional constructions, sculptural elements, scale models, and videos—the graduates of the Laboratory aim to explore the boundaries and discover new applications of scenographic practice. They investigate the potential of performative and narrative spaces, examining their relationships with the viewer, the body and costumes, color, composition, and time—elements that are fundamental to theatre.

The works of the graduates are presented on the theatre stage and share the same space with the audience. This sharing lies in daring to imagine and participate in creating different, shared perspectives and worlds, in the present moment.

2024 marks the 24th anniversary Laboratory of Scenography, Athens (LSA). I would like to take the opportunity and thank my students and colleagues for the valuable experiences, knowledge, imagination and mutual love for Scenography. Your approaches, did not ever leave me any chance not to look at the perspectives of new scenographical paths. This post covid academic year ends with the Graduation Exhibition at the “Fournos” Theatre.
I would line to thank: Myrto Kambusi and Apostolos Tsatsakos for the excellent collaboration. Thomas Oikonomakos for his support and advices in lighting design and of course the curator, scenographer and visual artist, based in Amsterdam, Ariadne Sergoulopoulou. Ariadne was also an alumnus of LSA 2016 and is a great honor that she is signing this year the curation of the exhibition.
